FAQs

Here are some answers that may answer your concerns.

When is the best age to start learning the piano?

I think the best age for a child to start learning is when they can understand and follow instructions, usually 4 - 9 years old is a good age to start.

I am already an adult/senior. Is it too old to start?

It is never too late to start learning a new skill! Certainly, it takes time to be good at something, so aiming to be a professional pianist may not be a realistic goal. However, if you're looking to enjoy playing popular tunes and performing for family and friends, you can do it at any age!

I/My children would like to learn the piano but find it abit too expensive.

Sure! If you're looking to learn the piano but fees are a concern, you can ask a friend(s) for group lessons. This can be arranged if students are of similar levels.

Do I have to go for exams for every grade?

Unlike academics, students are not required to go for exams at every grade. Nonetheless, it is still necessary to learn the materials for each grade to have a good foundation. The only required exam is the Grade 5 theory exam to advance for practicals* of Grade 6 onwards.

* Practicals=piano playing, separate from theory exams.

Help, my child does not want to practice!

This is a challenge for most parents and students. It takes A LOT of self-discipline and motivation to get yourself seated at the piano every day. Even the most passionate learner may have days where they just do not want to do it. The first step is to build a routine. Having a set time every day to just sit at the piano for a start of 5 minutes helps. Next, is to make practice a rewarding experience. Alternate practice with, "mindless exploration", getting a song by ear, so it doesn't have to be achievement-based all the time! Praising a child for getting a piece down also helps in motivating them to continue. Gradually, as students become more adjusted, practicing will come more naturally.
